Time to work

We spend many years and many hours of our lives at work. It cannot be avoided; work plays a key role in shaping our levels of happiness.

If we look closely at how people experience positive and negative affective states like enjoyment, stress, and worry in their day-to-day lives, as well as job satisfaction and employee engagement, we find that being self-employed is associated with higher levels of stress and worry. This is not surprising. Owning a business can be very rewarding, but it can also be very stressful.

Honestly, unemployment is destructive to people’s well-being. Individuals who are unemployed also say that they have negative emotional experiences in their day-to-day lives.

Having a job is important not only because of the salary. Research shows that other parts of work are also very important for happiness. Work gives people social status, relationships, a daily routine, and goals. All of these strongly affect happiness.

Work influences happiness, and happiness influences work success. Being happy at work, thus, isn’t just a personal matter; it’s also an economic one.
